The unit-price directive was implemented in the UK in 1999 and its aim is to allow consumers to compare prices of similar products that are sold in different sizes and packages.

Now the European Commission has launched an overall review of the directive. Small shops have so far been exempt in certain circumstances from the requirement to display the unit price in addition to the sale price of their goods.

The Fresh Produce Consortium has always supported derogation for small shops and will be making this view known to the DTI.

'Since the introduction of the derogation, there has been no technological development that would reduce the burden on small retailers, market-stall holders or farm shops,' said ceo Doug Henderson. 'Therefore we feel there is a strong argument to support a continuing derogation.' Responses to the consultation are required by 30 September 2002.
