Representatives from growers' unions FNSEA, JA and FNPF issued a statement on Friday announcing that a framework contract has been agreed after weeks of negotiation with supermarkets and demonstrations on the part of growers. Under the agreement, prices paid by the multiples to growers for top quality peaches and nectarines will be re-evaluated .

The unions are now calling on the authorities to take the necessary measures to enshrine the agreement in law. 'Although this contract only applies to peaches and nectarines, all steps possible must be taken to ensure the smooth running of this and future campaigns across the range of summer fruits,' the statement issued by the FNSEA on July 19 declared.

The three unions vowed they would be watching carefully to ensure the agreement is applied and have called on their members to put an end to direct action against the supermarkets.

At the behest of unions, growers in the south of France took had taken their protests to stores vandalising trolleys at 16 stores 10 days ago by covering them with dirty motor oil. Their anger was caused by dismay at prices paid by supermarkets of ?0.40-0.80 a kilo for their fruit when production costs run at ?1.10-1.50.
