Britain’s General Union (GMB) released average wage figures for the food and leisure sector, broken down by supermarket and region. The GMB represents more than 85,000 workers in the food and leisure sector and presented its findings at the GMB’s conference for Food and Leisure.

The union found that both Morrison and Co-op workers would need to work over 100 hours per week to earn the national average wage while London-based workers for the major retailers need to work 120 hours per week to earn the average wage for London.

GMB national secretary for food and leisure Phil Davies said: “Staff at supermarkets have historically faced low wages and it is time for them to get the respect they deserve. In an industry that is thriving due to the public’s growing dependence on supermarkets for their daily need, the workers deserve a living wage. The GMB is calling on all supermarkets to invest in their workers and share their success with their front line staff.”

On average Tesco workers have the best pay rate at £6.03 per hour but staff would still need to work 79 hours a week to achieve the national average.
