Umbrian spring blesses stonefruit

Abundant winter snowfall and ample rains have combined in the Italian region of Umbria to ensure optimism among growers for a good stonefruit season this summer.

Water levels in lakes and rivers have risen throughout the region and prospects are for a better season than in 2005.

Regular frosts until well into the spring were reported by producers in the regional press. And recent warmer temperatures have been bringing out blossom in the trees.

The region’s main stonefruit crops are plums, nectarines and peaches.
