Potatoes have real export potential

British horticultural businesses have been urged to consider exporting 'for the good of the nation's economic recovery', as well as their own.

At a special British reception at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Dan Rutstein, UKTI's director of trade and investment in Germany, said that exports have a key role to play in helping get growth back into the UK. 'We are seeing an increasing amount of product available for export and we want those numbers to go higher,' he stressed. 'We need to see more exports, as well as foreign investment in the UK.'

UKTI is working with industry bodies such as English Apples & Pears to help British fresh produce firms prepare for the various rules and nuances of the export market. Products such as apples and seed potatoes are particularly well suited due to their hardiness during transit.

And Rutstein insisted that British companies still have a great reputation around the world. 'It never ceases to amaze me how much interest there is in our products. People like to do business with us.'
