UK veg firm is inaugural World Grower of the Year

Southern England Farms was crowned World Grower of the Year at an awards ceremony in Amsterdam on Friday.

The SEF team was presented with its trophy by Jat Sahota, category manager for fruit at Sainsbury’s, the overall sponsor of the awards.

According to organisers, the decision to name SEF as champion was unanimous from the panel of four judges - from China, The Netherlands, Colombia and the UK.

“The judges were impressed with SEF's rapid development from scratch over an 11 year period and its commitment and vision in growing into a powerful force in the vegetable production industry in the UK,” organisers said.

World Fruit Grower of the Year was Waima Fruit Company, of New Zealand, a top-fruit and kiwifruit producer.

And the UK shared top spot in the World Salad Grower of the Year, with Dutch tomato grower Lans and British salads producer John Baarda taking the prize.

World Organic Grower of the Year went to Beijing Qingpuyuan Vegetables Company, of China, which was described as “dedicated to organic growing with a long-term goal for achieving durable results”.
