Home-grown radishes have hit UK supermarket shelves this week in what is shaping up to be a strong season for the product.

The first UK volumes of the colourful field-grown salad vegetable hit shelves on Mondat, a month before its home-grown salad bowl companions.

Scott Watson of Norfolk-based, Feltwell Growers, pulled the first bulbs this weekend.

He said: “It’s been a challenging couple of growing months which have been hampered by a colder-than-average spring. However, we’re now being rewarded with some sunshine and we’re seeing a healthy first cropping.”

The first batch of UK radish crop will be the hardy Spring Star variety lauded for its “rich red colour, good crunch and infamous spicy bite”.

Scientists recently found that radishes are even healthier than strawberries and have similar anti-cancer properties to broccoli. Independent studies have shown that radishes have three times more anthocyanins than strawberries and contains the same ‘superfood’ qualities as broccoli.
