Fresh fruit and vegetable supply is the lowest in the UK out of all EU member states, according to statistics released today.

EU agency Eurostat has published a report analysing consumption and production trends since 2000 - and per capita availability of fruit and veg came out lowest in the UK and Lithuania.

Greece and France had the greatest availability.

According to a report on Reuters, oranges were the item most available to consumers between 2000 and 2006, with 29kg per inhabitant on offer, then apples at 19kg and fesh tomatoes at 12kg.

The report revealed considerable differences across the EU in terms of retail availability and pricing of fresh fruit and veg.
