UK growers sing the blues

British blueberries will be available in substantial quantities in supermarkets for the first time ever this summer.

Growers have been busy planning for some time and the first plants, which were planted five years ago, have matured and are now bearing fruit.

The peak British blueberry season will be for about six weeks during July and August.

This will give UK consumers the opportunity to try home-grown fruit, as alternatives to imports from Europe, as well as Chile and the US at other times of year.

Blueberries have been described as an “essential summer superfood” by the Seasonal Berries campaign, which is promoting their health benefits as a low-calorie snack that is high in vitamin C, and can help maintain youthful-looking skin and boost the immune system.
