Despite yesterday's announcement of a flat Christmas at Morrisons, TNS Superpanel data has revealed that UK supermarkets enjoyed record sales in the final three months of 2004.

Takings in the final calendar quarter rose to £16.9 billon, compared to £16.2bn a year earlier.

Tesco was the big winner, increasing its share of the retail food sector to 29 per cent, which represents a considerable tightening of its grip. 12 months previously, Tesco represented 26.6 per cent of the sector.

Asda too performed strongly, according to TNS figures, and closed the period with an all-time high 17.1 per cent of the food retail sector.

Individual figures are due from Sainsbury's today (Thursday) and Tesco next Tuesday. Visit freshinfo for the latest news.
