Asda kicked off its UK salad season this week with its first arrivals of Yorkshire cucumbers into local stores.

English Village Salads planted its first crop eight weeks ago and began harvesting earlier this week.

Grower Martin Ellis from Halsham Salads in Cottingham visited his local store in Kingswood, Hull to hand deliver the first crates of this year’s crop.

“We usually start harvesting cucumbers around this time of year and despite the poor light levels, the care and attention we’ve given the plants has ensured that we were able to start a few days early,” said Ellis.

Kaine Edgar, fresh manager at Asda Kingswood said: “More and more of our customers are telling us they want to be able to buy British fruit and veg wherever possible so we’re delighted to be the first to give them the chance to buy not only British cucumbers, but ones that have actually been grown locally in Yorkshire.”

Asda said it expects to have UK tomatoes hitting the shelves towards the end of March and field-grown lettuce from May.
