UK apple market finds balance

The UK apple market is in relatively good balance despite shortages and southern hemisphere production issues.

“There has been some fruit shipped from Chile, mainly Gala, that has not really met supermarket specifications because it is too soft, but there is no great mountain of apples in the UK at the moment,” one importer told freshinfo.

“It could be that price expectations to growers are possibly not being met in general because of supermarket price battles and you have to remember now that a lot of exporting countries have other options and they are going to supply where it is easiest for them, rather than jump through all the hoops for the UK market and not get a good price.”
