Israeli exporting giant Agrexco has enjoyed one of its strongest seasons for potato exports to the UK.

Product manager Ori Zafir told FPJ: “There has been very strong demand for both conventional and organic product across the size range.”

The exporter supplies a number of varieties - Nicola, Maris Peer, Charlotte and Exquisa as part of the conventional offer as well as organic Nicola, Maris Peer, Valor and Sante - to the UK.

“We are approaching the end of our season and, in one month or so, we will have run out of stock,” Zafir added. “But then we will start on the maincrop, mainly with Maris Piper, but the majority has already been contracted and sold.”

A trial with organic Maris Piper - with 100 tonnes being exported to the UK - has shown promise, Zafir told FPJ, and volumes are expected to triple next season.

A 25t sample of the Kiko variety, a maincrop variety with a high percentage of bakers, was also well received.
