Marks & Spencer is hoping for a third year of success with its UFO peach and is rolling the fruit out nationwide for the first time.
The retailer said it has seen sales uplift of 300 per cent since launching the fruit two years ago.
The peach, from varieties called Saturn and Jupiter, is nicknamed the UFO peach due to its flat shape. Saturn will be available until the end of January, while the Jupiter variety will hit the shelves in the summer.
Both varieties have white flesh with a more delicate and aromatic flavour than the traditional yellow fleshed peach.
Andrew Sharp, M&S technical manager, said: “The appeal of the UFO peach is its novelty value and the fact it is so easy to eat, as well as its great taste. It’s a really popular choice for parents who want to find a novel way to persuade children to eat fruit.”
The retailer said it was now developing a UFO nectarine as sales of smooth-skinned nectarines have now overtaken sales of furry-skinned peaches.
