Self-service wholesaler Makro has appointed “restructuring specialist” to attempt to arrest the slide in fortunes at the business.

Juergen Schwarze will join the UK business from German parent company Metro Group on 1 October as managing director.

The company said the appointment “underlines the firm intention of the German wholesale company to turnaround the UK business”.

The move follows a strengthening of its top-management team after major reorganisation of the board in June.

Last month, Makro UK announced changes to four of its board members and introduced senior professionals from the consultancy firm AlixPartners who will remain members of the board of directors of Makro UK in order to further support the restructuring and turn-around process.

Schwarze joined Metro Group in October 2008 as corporate head of internal audit. Prior to this he worked for Metro AG.

He said: “I am grateful and very much looking forward to getting into this important position and to working together with all the colleagues in the UK on the turn-around of our business.

“We all know that we have a very challenging job ahead, but I am absolutely confident that there is a lot of potential and many options as long as we fully focus on the needs of our customers.”

The 43-year-old Schwarze holds a degree in business administration.
