Scientists in New Jersey have found that the curry spice turmeric holds potential for the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer, when combined with certain vegetables.

Scientists from Rutgers' University's Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy tested turmeric, along with phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a naturally occurring substance found in abundance in a group of vegetables such as watercress, cabbage, winter cress, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, kohlrabi and turnips.

Prostate cancer is among the leading causes of death amongst men. The incidence and mortality rates of the disease have not decreased in decades despite efforts and resources devoted to treatment.

The discovery appeared in the latest issue of the journal Cancer Research.
