Fruit, high protein pasta and energy bars proved invaluable resources for the Journal's very own Pam Tullet and daughter Amy as they brushed off their trainers and dug out their sports gear to embark on a 26-mile walk in aid of breast cancer.
Actually, ësports gear' is a pretty loose interpretation of what Pam and Amy actually showed up in. Keen not to go un-noticed in the murky darkness of starting time, the flamboyant pair hit the line in pink butterfly wings, pink glitter, in fact, by their own admittance ëanything pink we could lay our hands on'.
ëOur start time was midnight,” an exhausted Pam revealed, “and after the cattle herding of last year we were determined to be up the front. Luckily it didn't rain but it was quite cold and windy at times and we made much better time in the first half than we did last year.”
The determined pair battled on, despite the constant threat of serious injury. “The second half was slower as Amy's little toe was hurting and she had to adopt a strange walk with her right foot sticking out, but on the plus side they also supplied fruit as well as the water for the last stage which we gorged on, so not needing all the glucose tablets and energy bars we took,” Pam continued.
“All in all it was a good night and the helpers and police were giving encouragement all the way. A particularly nice bit was when we were walking through Hyde Park and the sun was coming up.”
But it wasn't all a walk in the park (so to speak). “As you can imagine, walking 26 miles in one go is tiring but doing it without any sleep was too exhausting for words,” Pam conceded.”
It looks as though this will be the last time Pam and Amy have to endure such hardships, as they've put an end to their marathon walking career. “We're definitely NOT doing it again,” said an adamant Pam.
However, their madness knows no bounds. “Maybe will try to do the London marathon next year,” she piped merrily. Bushel Box is full of admiration, but will stick to its Snickers.
