The UK's domestic transport is being outperformed by many European nations

The CBI has claimed that business leaders will not invest in the UK because the country's transport system is at breaking point.

According to a report, Is Transport holding the UK back?, the CBI warns that despite strong international air and sea links the domestic transport system is being outperformed by those in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the US. Also, the cost of transporting freight by road in the UK is higher then elsewhere in Europe.

The organisation has accused the government of tarnishing the UK's reputation by its failure to improve the transport infrastructure costing business £20 billion a year in road congestion alone.

CBI deputy director-general John Cridland said: “Transport has been a thorn in the side of the UK economy for too long. The existing system has been pushed to breaking point.”
