Generous traders at New Covent Garden Market donated a “badly needed” four tonnes of fruit and vegetables to homeless charity Crisis over the festive period.
The donation helped the charity overcome a 5.5 tonne shortfall in provisions, without which it could not have supplied the required 4,000 meals to those in need.
It was collected by food redistribution network City Harvest, which needed two vans to collect the donated produce from the wholesale market, on Nine Elms Lane in south London.
The team collected donations from across the market throughout the night, including nine kg of pears donated by wholesaler Bevington Salads.
“The traders at New Covent Garden Market were so generous and this was badly needed by Crisis at Christmas because they didn't have enough fruit and veg for their 4000 clients,” said Mark Harvey, redistribution coordinator.
“Everyone at the market was so generous that we were totally blown away with your warmth towards the homeless at Christmas,” he added.
