It might seem somewhat callous to be talking about business while deep beneath the streets the rescue services continue the grisly task of searching for those still missing in the aftermath of London’s bombing atrocity.

However, the words on everyone’s lips are: life must go on. What impact the bombing will have on the capital’s fresh produce sector remains very much to be seen, certainly some in the catering side will be nervously waiting to see how the tourist industry reacts to the terrorist attacks.

But traders remain defiant declaring the fact it is still very much “business as usual”. This attitude is vital and sets an excellent example from the fresh produce sector to the rest of the city.

The attacks certainly took the shine off what should have been a day of celebration following the capital’s success in landing the 2012 Olympics, but that does not change the fact the Olympic committee’s decision is still excellent news, particularly for traders at the capitals wholesale markets.

Having the Olympics on their doorstep gives them a fantastic chance to boost their business, both with the actual event itself, and the tourism it will encourage, but also with the investment and development that will take place in the area leading up to the Games. We need to ensure that we do not allow the bombings to overshadow that opportunity and focus on making sure the industry makes the most of what the Olympic Games will bring to the UK in seven year’s time.
