Despite drawing a record number of exhibitors, there did seem to be a slightly quieter feel around the hallowed halls of Messe Berlin this year.

How much this was down to the failure of the UK and European airport systems to cope with a spot of snow - can you tell how bitter I am? - I am not sure. However, the official Fruit Logistica report released after the show did indeed confirm a comparable number of visitors to last year, in contrast with the “record-breaking footfall” press releases we have become used to over the years.

Nevertheless, the fact that so many people from the UK I spoke to at the show had battled through convoluted transport schedules to make it to Berlin is a benchmark of how crucial this trade fair is in the global produce industry calendar - and how its importance in the eyes of the UK trade is growing all the time.

Unsurprisingly, this year there was much talk of exchange rates, recession, retailer-supplier relationships and climate change. But this issue of FPJ also reflects the sense of innovation and optimism driving the industry that became apparent to us as we met with clients.

Hopefully, you all made it back in one piece and are now fully recovered from the aching limbs, pounding heads - none self-inflicted, I am sure - and other assorted illnesses no doubt contracted while tramping the halls. See you all next year.
