Torres towers over avo competition

Supersize Torres avocados from Argentina are back in Tesco this week after frosts put paid to last year’s export crop.

The variety is brought in by Worldwide Fruit and this year Tesco is marketing the fruit at £1.50 each under its Finest label in 88 of its upmarket stores.

“There is enough volume for at least three months supply,” said avocado product manager at Worldwide, Mark Everrett. “Torres is a native Argentinean variety and is typically three times the size of a medium avocado and can weight up to 1kg.”

Torres is characterised by its smooth, green skin, which changes to black on ripening. It is grown by Horacio Frias in the Tucuman region of north-western Argentina.
