High prices for bananas caused a stir on UK wholesale markets this week.
Product was in short supply due to crop failure in South America and cold weather on the Ivory Coast, and prices shot up to almost 1,400p for 18kg.
During the first week in January, bananas fetched between 600 and 800p.
'We just couldn't get rid of them then, and before Christmas we were practically giving them away,' said a Sheffield market salesman. l
