Tomatoes in LED lighting

A British tomato grower wil be able to grow the fruit all-year-round after investing in LED interlighting for its new hi-tech greenhouse.

R & L Holt's Sandylands Nurseries, in Worcestershire, will see 4,000 Philips GreenPower LED interlighting modules installed in the coming weeks by Philips' sister company, Certhon.

The family-run business, dedicated to producing tomatoes since 1980, grows a variety of tomatoes at its two Sandylands sites, including cherries, cocktail and large tomatoes.

Although all its tomatoes are currently grown in heated glasshouses, which means that the season can stretch from February to November, the interlighting equipment will allow R & L Holt to prolong this to year-round British tomato production.
