Looking back over 50 years at last weeks Tomato Growers Association conference in Coventry, TGA chairman Hayman described an industry that has changed beyond recognition. One of the most significant aspects is glasshouse technology that has continued to boost yields as one way to keep the industry profitable.

The question on the lips of most delegates though was whether this sustainable situation can continue. One fear is that the high price of oil will impinge further on gas prices.

"Energy is the hot topic at present," Chris Plackett of FEC Services told the conference. He expects to see a 30 per cent increase in the near future. The industry benefits from a rebate system if it can reach saving targets, but Plackett questioned whether these targets are likely to be hit in the prevailing financial climate.

Describing modern tomato growing as a "blend of crop science and engineering," he claimed that Defra is not convinced that growers are taking the savings potential and benefits seriously," he claimed. "Sooner or later I personally believe that the rebate will have to go," he concluded.
