The rising challenges of tomato growing are to be the major topics under discussion at this year’s Tomato Conference.

The event, jointly organised by the Horticulture Development Council, the Tomato Growers Association and Warwick HRI, will look at issues such as rising energy costs, dealing with powerful customers and reacting to changes in consumer demand, among others.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Douglas Gurr, of internet-wholesaler Blueheath, who will give a presentation entitled “Beaten paths - a sideways look at the past, present and possible futures of the British tomato growing industry”.

A spokesman said: “With what may seem like a mountain for the industry to climb, we have the ideal speaker, in the person of Everest mountaineer Barry Roberts, to talk at the infamous conference dinner.”

Sponsors of the event, which takes place at the Royal Court Hotel, Coventry on September 29, include Syngenta S&G Seeds, as main event sponsors, as well as Hoogendoorn Automation, Certis Biological Crop Protection, Delfland Nurseries and Fauvic Nurseries.

The event has also attracted a record number of trade exhibitors with stands at the conference, both on the day and during the previous afternoon, when the TGA’s AGM will once again be held.
