The growth in the grocery retail market received a boost in February, TNS data released today has revealed, with Asda continuing its strong performance.

The results show the market grew 5.3 per cent in the four weeks to February 25, compared to 4.7 per cent in the previous period.

Growth remains relatively strong despite the slow-down in inflation, which suggests good underlying volumes, according to TNS.

Asda showed good growth at 8.6 per cent, down from 9.0 per cent in the previous period, but a very strong result, according to TNS.

UK number-one retailer Tesco showed a weak result, according to TNS analysis, with a 7.7 per cent growth, up from 6.3 per cent in the last period.

Sainsbury’s showed good growth - 7.4 per cent - up from 7.6 per cent in the lat period.

Growth at Morrisons shot to 4.9 per cent this period, up from 2.8 per cent in the previous TNS analysis.
