TNS: encouraging grocery retail growth

The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures show that the spending slowdown in the UK grocery market may not be as sharp as first feared.

Results for the 12 weeks ending September 9 indicate that sales through grocers are growing at an annual rate of four per cent - up three per cent on the last report.

TNS director of research Edward Garner deemed the figures “encouraging”.

Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s have continued the recent trend and all exceeded the market growth rate, and have therefore all lifted their shares compared with a year ago.

Iceland continued its recovery, and enjoyed a solid eight per cent boost.

The growth rate at Morrisons remained low at two per cent, with its market share dipping from 11.0 per cent 12 months ago, to 10.8 per cent.

Somerfield posted a fall in turnover similar to the last period, at seven per cent.

The combined share of the discounters lifted from 5.3 per cent a year ago, to 5.6 per cent. The aftermath of the Kwik Save collapse is still being felt, Garner said.
