TNS: Asda stays at number two

The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures published today, for the 12 weeks ending April 23, 2006, show Asda still holding on to the number two spot (16.3 per cent share) with Sainsbury remaining at 16.0 per cent. This gap of 0.3 share points has been maintained for the last two periods - evidence of the intensity of competition in the grocery market, said the market information group.

The Asda year-on-year growth rate has improved to three per cent - in line with the total market but Sainsbury remains ahead with five per cent growth. If this situation continues, the gap will close.

Tesco’s growth remains subdued compared with the levels seen last year but eight per cent is still out-performing the market and its share continues to increase (30.8 per cent in the latest period).

And Morrisons continues its return to stability - the year-on-year decline of just four per cent is the chain’s best performance for the last 21 periods.
