Sales of tinned tomatoes are soaring as home cooking becomes more popular during the credit crunch.

According to The Telegraph, Sainsbury’s 30p can of ‘Basic’ range chopped tomatoes has become the retailer’s best-selling line - prompting experts to claim it is proof of a return to basic home cooking standards.

Two million cans of tomatoes from the range have been sold in the last month, a 30 per cent rise on the year-earlier period.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said: “Household budgets are tighter than last year so people will be dining out less, but demand for high-quality food to cook at home is on the increase.”
