According to the weather app on my phone, it’s currently -16°C in Berlin, which could prompt a rethink of my packing arrangements for Fruit Logistica next week.

Admittedly, my phone also recently claimed I was in São Paulo when I was actually at London Bridge, so its credibility as an information provider is questionable to say the least. But you get the idea - winter has finally arrived, and it’s making up for lost time.

With all the challenges facing the industry at the moment, everyone will have their fingers crossed that the predicted Siberian weather coming our way does not damage crops, but does give a boost to demand for winter vegetables.

After the generally depressing month of January, there’s lots to look forward to over the coming few weeks. As the first of many popular crops start to come into season, supermarkets will be priming their press officers to claim to be the first to get British products on shelf. It might only be a single box in one local store, but the column inches and excitement this creates is all great publicity for the industry.

It’s a good time of year - a time to reinvigorate the public’s passion for produce and give them more ideas and inspiration to eat healthily.
