The new logistics centre will be located at the Port of Tilbury

A major new logistics centre at the Port of Tilbury is on schedule to be operational by February 2016, it has been announced.

The £25m investment is a joint venture between the port and chilled food distributor NFT, and will aim to provide “a single point of contact” between port, warehousing, distribution and retailer.

It will offer chilled storage, distribution and pre-retail services on a 230,000 sq ft site and be able to handle a over 2.5 million cases per week.

Located east of London at the mouth of the river Thames, the new logistics centre will be able to serve any inbound services from the south east of the country, not just those destined for the Port of Tilbury.

At an official opening earlier this year, NFT and the Port of Tilbury initially said the centre would be operational by late 2015.

Tilbury's planned logistics centre is the latest in a series of major port expansions, with plans for similar developments at Dover, Felixstow and DP World London Gateway.
