Thank fruit it's Fruity Friday!

Today is Fruity Friday, the fun annual event organised by the World Cancer Research Fund to increase awareness of the importance of a healthy diet to cancer prevention.

This year, WCRF has produced more than 20,000 Fruity Friday fundraising packs and 25,000 Scratch Activity Posters that have been distributed to companies, schools, health professionals, groups and individuals. Today alone, WCRF also hopes to raise more than £100,000.

Support has been received from a host of celebrities, including Chris Tarrant, pictured, who made no bones about it, he loves bananas. “I’ve always loved bananas. As a little boy I loved banana sandwiches. My engineer at Capital Radio, a strange little chap, lived almost entirely on a banana diet. My mum, now aged 87, has to have bananas every day as an essential ingredient for her potassium requirement and I just love them,” he said.

The showcase event of Fruity Friday is taking place in Hyde Park, as thousands try to Beat the Banana! in a 5k run, starting at 5.30pm.

Other celebrities backing the campaign are Kevin McCloud who grows his own apples, Robert Lindsay, Nell McAndrew, Fearne Cotton, Miriam Margoyles, Graham Norton and James Martin.

All celebrities were asked to wear a specially designed T-shirt, as modeled by Tarrant, as well as provide WCRF with a story about their favourite fruit.

Industry support comes from British Summer Fruits agency Sputnik Communications and Jazz apples agency Yes! Consultancy.
