The Thanet Earth project has been praised for its size and scale

Gurkha soldiers have been assigned to patrol the perimeter of the Thanet Earth project in east Kent to protect the greenhouses’s valuable crops.

The former troops will patrol the site near Birchington as part of security company G4S - one of the largest employers of ex-British Army Gurkhas, reports thisiskent.co.uk.

The fledgling site produces thousands of cucumbers and tomatoes and is the result of significant investment. The site currently contains three glasshouses, the largest of which is almost ten hectares in size used by Rainbow Growers, Kaaij Redstar and A&A Growers.

“We were impressed by the Gurkha officers who were guarding a site nearby and recognise the skills that they will bring to securing our unique premises.” said site managing director Steve McVickers.

“A number of Gurkha women also work at Thanet Earth; we have enormous respect for the Gurkha culture and values,” he said.
