Flooding in Thailand is hampering sendings from the south-east Asian country but more crucially is causing severe difficulties for the Thai population involved in the fresh produce sector.
Ronny Liu, of Re:fresh award-winning foodservice supplier and wholesaler Cook’s Delight and Sunnyfield Veg said: “The flooding is very serious. It is not just affecting containers leaving Thailand, but a lot of people are really suffering. In the northern part of Thailand, some crops have been washed away completely. Buildings are flooded. One of my durian suppliers has lost everything.”
Liu is running a fund-raising campaign for those affected by the disaster from his businesses at New Spitalfields Market and Swindon. For every £10 his customers spend on Thai produce or Asian pears, he will donate £1 to humanitarian effort.
“This little help has got big potential because, with your support, it can help to rebuild the lives of the sufferers in these two countries,” said Liu.
Prices for Thai produce, such as long beans, have been steadily rising in the marketplace as supplies wane due to the flooding which has been worsening since July.
