Tesco has become the first retailer to have its in-house training accredited.

The recognition from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority gives Tesco trainees a nationally accepted and transferable qualification.

A spokeswoman for the QCA said: “It is our ambition to build on this important initiative to recognise in-house training and the value it contributes to enhancing the skills UK business needs.”

Tesco also announced it would be launching a pilot scheme next year, offering apprenticeship training to those over 24-years-old.

In the past, such schemes have been limited to people aged between 16 and 24, but Tesco aims to address concerns that older people have difficulties getting back into the job market.
