Tesco could be planning to supersize its stores in the US after reporting that it had taken a lease on a 32,500 sqft store in Los Angeles.

This means the supermarket could be planning stores twice as large as expected.

Tesco, which has set up its American head quarters in El Segundo, California, had indicated that it was planning a convenience store chain with 12,000 sq ft outlets.

Analysts said that Tesco could divide the Glassell Park site or bring in a concession so that it would be left with a store that matches the original plans.
