Tesco to build training centre

Tesco has applied to Broxbourne Council for permission to build a training academy near its headquarters in Cheshunt.

The planning application details a proposal to redevelop the existing sports and social club in Theobolds Park into a facility, which includes two conference and meeting centres, as well as overnight accommodation to cater for 80 people.

Tesco intends the centre to be used for training events and courses for its UK staff and management from its international outlets, with facilities to allow for team activity days, and online learning.

It would also provide a learning resource library and facilities for video conferencing, and provide jobs for an estimated 45 people.

In a supporting statement, Tesco’s application claimed it would contain the latest training facilities available to enable “consistent delivery of world-class training”.

The County Club site covers 43,000 square metres and the proposed developments would increase the current floorspace on the site from 1,535sqm to 6,405sqm.

The application proposes to keep the club’s bowling green on its western side, tennis courts and football pitch.

It is thought the planning application will be considered in July.
