Tesco takes delivery of first Jersey Royal Company potatoes

The first tray of this year’s Jersey Royal Company outdoor crop has been delivered to Tesco after harvesting delays due to the frost in February.

The potato will only be available in limited numbers for the next few weeks.

The splashes of rain over the Bank Holiday weekend have aided the crop a little, but it is still very delayed.

Despite this, The Jersey Royal Company’s managing director Tom Binet is still hopeful the season could become one of the strongest on record after a reduced crop in 2011.

“This years plantings all went well… However adverse weather throughout the month of February effectively suspended the growth of the potatoes and has resulted in a delay to the availability of the first real commercial volume,” he said.

“We are confident however that the warmer spells that have now appeared combined with British public’s desire for this iconic product will drive us to one of our most successful campaigns of recent years.”

Jersey Royal potatoes are expected to be on sale nationwide from late April through to late July.
