Tesco has strengthened its position in the Czech market with the acquisition of 11 Carrefour outlets in Prague for around CZK 4 billion (£96 million).

The retailer took over the stores last month, strengthening its position in the Czech grocery market where it has been operating for a decade.

While experts predict that fierce competition will force many retailers out of the country, sales figures place Tesco as a leading player in the industry. Last year it ranked fifth in terms of sales, worth CZK 20.45bn (nearly £500m).

The move comes as part of a dynamic effort by the retailer to increase its foothold in international markets.

It will buy four Carrefour stores in Slovakia, although the Slovak antitrust office is yet to approve the deal.

Carrefour will take over eight Tesco outlets in Taiwan.
