Tesco scoops top retail prize

Tesco was crowned the Consumers’ Favourite Retailer by TNS Worldpanel at the Retail Week awards ceremony on Thursday.

The UK number-one retailer also came top in the grocery sub-category.

A total of 15,000 TNS Worldpanel consumer panellists were asked to nominate their favourite retailer in each key retail sector - grocery, entertainment and electrical, telecoms, home and furnishings, clothing and footwear, cosmetics and toiletries and DIY - as well as their overall favourite.

A sizeable 16.7 per cent of respondents voted for Tesco as their overall favourite retailer, with Asda and Marks & Spencer coming in second and third, with 13.0 per cent and 11.4 per cent respectively.

The supermarket giant ranked in the top 10 in six out of the seven retail categories.

TNS Worldpanel research executive Elaine Giles said: “There is clear trend that supermarkets are increasingly seen as a one-stop shop by consumers for all sorts of items, not just the weekly food shop. Most have stocked non-grocery ranges for a while but we are now seeing them move further into new markets and the appeal of low prices has been a real winner with consumers.”
