Tesco has promoted one of its fresh foods bosses to its executive committee harnessing more than 20 years of experience and adding to speculation over Sir Terry Leahy’s eventual successor as chief executive.
Colin Holmes, the supermarket giants’ fresh foods commercial director, has been appointed to the committee but will continue in his role as director simultaneously.
Holmes, who has also worked in the company’s convenience sector and been UK finance director, was promoted for his talent-spotting abilities according to the retailer.
Analysts have suggested Leahy’s successor will be sourced from managers at Holmes’ level rather than from the main board directors.
