Tesco proclaimed cheapest

Tesco has overtaken Asda to be proclaimed the cheapest UK supermarket, according to The Grocer 100.

The survey, which compares the prices of goods at major supermarkets, put Tesco in first place for price, ending Asda’s unbeaten run of seven years as the UK’s cheapest.

An average shop at Tesco cost £167.84, 0.4 per cent less than at Asda, although the magazine did say that on average, Asda was the cheapest place to shop.

Since July, Tesco has been closing the gap on Asda, cutting its prices by an average of 2.7 per cent.

Sainsbury’s bill for the same items came to £175.30, however the retailer's prices had also been falling since January.

The anonymous list of 100 products ranges from branded products through to fresh fruit and vegetables.

An Asda spokesman said: "Unlike some of our competitors, we don't do short term promotional price drops. Instead we simply guarantee to our customers that our prices will always be low, every day of the year.

"The Grocer confirms that on average we are still the cheapest, even if Tesco has beaten us on price one week out of the last 7 years."
