Tesco has seen sales growth for the first time since January 2014, the latest Kantar Worldpanel figures show.

The UK's biggest supermarket increased sales by 0.3 per cent for the 12 weeks to 1 February compared with the same period last year.

However, Kantar's findings suggested that the supermarket giant continues to lose UK market share (from 29.2 per cent 29 per cent), as the hard-discounters and high-end retailer Waitrose saw rises in sales and market share.

Elsewhere,Sainsbury's lost its position as the second largest UK grocery retailer by market share to Asda.

Aldi and Lidl saw their market share increase by 0.8 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively in the period the data covers.

The former also saw sales increase by 21.1 per cent, and Lidl saw sales rise by 14.2 per cent.

However, the discounters' rate of sales growth has slowed compared with the peak periods of April and May last year, Kantar Worldpanel said.

Waitrose, meanwhile, saw sales rise of 7.2 per cent, taking its overall market share to 5.2 per cent
