Tesco plans to become better neighbour

Tesco is to release plans to transform itself into a better neighbour, reports The Sunday Times.

Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy, will announce the scheme in a speech to the Work Foundation, a business think tank, on Wednesday.

The UK’s number one supermarket has come under pressure in recent months for its huge profit-making, the number of new stores it is opening and its allegedly huge land bank. It stands accused in many quarters of playing the lead role in the demise of the traditional British high street.

That pressure could mount if, as expected, the Competition Commission launches a new inquiry into the British supermarket sector this week.

Leahy’s pre-emptive proposals, said The Sunday Times will focus on three core areas: the environment, health and local communities. “The plan will include numerous small initiatives, such as improving lorry suspensions to make delivery trucks quieter and more energy efficient, through to more ambitious projects that include getting two million people active before the 2012 London Olympics,” said the article.
