Tesco is building its first giant shopping centre in China in a huge development it hopes will set the standard for its future development.

A Tesco hypermarket, food court, gym and 500 apartments will feature in the half a million square foot development in Fushun, in the north east of the country.

Tesco hopes the Fushun Mall will open later this year, serving the local population of one million, attracting a number of Western retailers into the complex.

This is the first time Tesco has owned such a development and it plans to build four similar shopping centres this year and a further fourteen if they are successful, reports The Times

This marks the first time that Tesco has built a shopping centre, although it has been a tenant in others, none of which it has owned.

Ken Towle, ceo of Tesco in China, said the move would improve local income and quality of life.
