Tesco over the rainbow with colourful caulis

It may sound like a task worthy of Tom Cruise and the Mission: Impossible team, but Tesco has set out to make the cauliflower appeal to children.

Arguably one of the most hated vegetables among kids, the UK’s number-one supermarket is attempting to win them over with a “rainbow pack” of orange, emerald green, pink and white varieties.

The move comes on the back of Kantar Worldpanel figures showing a 6.5 per cent decline in cauliflower sales in the past two years and question marks over the future of UK production.

The new varieties are exclusive in Tesco, grown by Clements of Benington in Lincolnshire.

Tesco greens buyer Jeni Gray said: “These cauliflowers are almost works of art and have a real wow factor that should really create a stir with shoppers and hopefully children at dinner time. We know from sales that whenever we bring out innovative new produce such as pink and yellow mushrooms and black raspberries, they go down well with shoppers so we’re hoping that will be the case here.”

The 320g rainbow packs have gone on sale for £1.50.
