Tesco and Greenvale AP have launched a three-week celebration of local produce in Edinburgh to mark the first of the East Lothian potato crop, as part of their joint ‘direct from farm to store’ initiative.

The new initiative, which started June 16, promises to get potatoes in store within hours of being picked from the fields. Select Tesco stores around Edinburgh have been part of the scheme and have been receiving potatoes from Luffness Mains, in Aberlady, East Lothian. The scheme is the result of work between the growers and Greenvale AP working with the Tesco Scottish Office to deliver more local and seasonal products to stores around Scotland.

Last year, the scheme was piloted at a handful of stores and, thanks to its popularity with customers, it has now been rolled out across Edinburgh, in stores Corstorphine Extra, Dalkeith Harden Road, Broughton Road, Colinton, Haddington, Musselburgh, North Berwick, South Queensferry, Westerhailes and Penicuik.

Greenvale AP general manager Doug Bell said: “Customers have been loving the new potatoes, and the initiative that started as a pilot last year has now cemented itself into the calendar. We will be working with everyone involved to look into ways of extending the project next season.

“The whole point of new season potatoes is to get them as fresh as you possibly can and you can’t get much fresher than this way.”
