Tesco’s Tim Mason today topped Marketing’s annual Power 100 list - which named him the most powerful marketer in the UK.
Mason, who was at the number two spot last year, and has featured in the Power 100 top 10 for the past six years, topped the list for the first time.
He swapped places with PepsiCo's Martin Glenn, who is now rated in second place.
The Tesco marketer has worked at the forefront of a 10-year strategy that has turned the supermarket into the world's third-biggest retailer with profits of more than £2 billion.
His efforts were celebrated against the backdrop of the declining retail sector.
Tessa Jowell, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell, and Camelot chief executive Dianne Thompson completed the top five list.
There are 29 new entries in the latest Power 100 list.
The retail sector saw the biggest fallers - the position of Marks & Spencer’s Stuart Rose slipped dramatically.
