The Gwanipa ‘Tangy Twist’ melon, which will be supplied by AMT Fruit and stocked in Tesco stores nationwide, has a zingy citrus taste, while still retaining its typical melon flavour.
Although the Gwanipa has been on other European markets since 2012, this is the first time the fruit will be sold in the UK.
Tesco’s technical manager, James Cackett, said: “Spain is recognised for producing high-quality fruit.
“The Gwanipa ‘Tangy Twist’ melon will associate the AMT and Tesco businesses with quality and a dedication to providing customers with the best quality seasonal produce at a reasonable price.”
The melons will be priced at £1.40 per fruit and are available exclusively, for this year, in Tesco stores.
The seasonal fruit is being grown by Kernel Exports farms in the southern regions of Spain, including Murcia and Castilla La Mancha.
It will be available from mid-June until August – the key months for seasonal summer produce.
AMT Fruit, which is part of the AMC group, is Tesco’s dedicated citrus business for the UK and Ireland.
